With more than 1,300 members, the EPNS is a thriving and growing society which continues to play an important role in and beyond Europe by promoting training, clinical care and scientific research in the field of Paediatric Neurology.
It is an honour for me to serve as the President of the EPNS for a further term (2014-2018) and it is with delight that I see the EPNS drive forward from strength to strength in attaining its aims. Our dynamic members of the EPNS Board are dedicated to developing paediatric neurology, to give training and education to our younger colleagues at the highest level and to start new scientific and vibrant collaborations throughout Europe and beyond. Please take a moment to look at our 1st Annual EPNS report to learn about our recent achievements.
I invite you to explore our website to learn more about our exciting events and initiatives, and there is more to come! I would especially draw your attention the ‘Education and Training’ section to learn more about our training courses which have taken place in Hungary during 2015-2017, our recently announced dates for the training courses taking place in Alicante in 2018, the EPNS Visiting Teacher scheme and our EPNS Fellowship scheme. The EPNS 2018 Fellowship application period is now open! I extend my congratulations to Dr Filipe Palavra and Dr Ana Kosac for being awarded best presentations in Budapest this April, together with the 6 successful EPNS Fellowship candidates announced this February 2017. Our 2nd EPNS Masterclass at Cambridge University was held in September 2017 and the EPNS is delighted to announce that for the first time, an EPNS course has taken place in Astana, Kazakhstan in October 2017. The application period for the 2nd year of the EPNS Visiting Teacher is now closed, but it most likely there will be more opportunities in 2018.
Please also visit our ‘Research and Science’ section. I would like to express our delight in welcoming so many delegates to our 2nd EPNS International Symposium and 12th EPNS Congress which took place in Lyon in June 2017. We are still evaluating the feedback forms, but with an overall number of over 1,500 delegates from approx. 70 countries, clearly the meetings were a huge success and surpassed all expectations! I would like to offer my personal thanks to Vincent Des Portes, Alexis Arzimanoglou and their team, together with Jean-Pierre Lin for organising such wonderful events. The meetings presented outstanding scientific programmes and excellent networking opportunities. Our Congresses are held every 2 years, and in the alternate years we host a Research Meeting. These meetings have an established reputation for excellence and it was with pleasure we hosted the EPNS Research Meeting in Essen, Germany, in October 2016. We now start to plan our next EPNS Research Meeting which will take place in Alicante, Spain 26-27 October 2018.
The EPNS Congress 2019 will take place in Athens and we recently announced that Glasgow, UK will host the 14th Congress of the European Paediatric Neurology Society in 2021.
At the EPNS Congress in Lyon, the EPNS was thrilled to launch our latest exciting EPNS project; the EPNS Neurokids App and corresponding Workbook – an innovative answer to the clinical challenges in child neurology! With the basic idea of Mind Maps designed for daily professional practice, bundling the broad clinical spectrum. The App in particular is ideal for daily work and we are looking for our members to use the feedback function extensively. All fully paid up members of the EPNS are able to purchase this package via the EPNS website.
Thank you to Professor Dana Craiu for her hardwork as Chair of the Committee of National Advisors (CNA) over the last term and congratulations to the newly appointed CNA Executive Group: Chair: Coriene Catsman-Berrevoets, Secretary: Alasdair Parker and Maja Steinlin, Nina Barisic, Leena Haataja, Dilek Yalnizoglu

The election process is now complete, and the 21 EPNS Board member 2018-2022 candidates who received the highest number of votes in the recent election and will therefore will be joining the EPNS board. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to all the successful candidates. My commiserations to those who stood as candidates but received a smaller number of votes. Their participation is much appreciated and I hope that opportunities arise for the EPNS Board to invite a number of EPNS members to be co-opted to the EPNS Board, especially so that we can ensure that, as far as possible, the whole of Europe is represented on the Board. The new EPNS Board will be meeting in Leuven this January, together with the existing board. At this meeting we will discuss the options available for co-opting more members onto the Board.
Of course if you are not already a member of the EPNS and you are a physician with a research or clinical interest in Paediatric Neurology, we would be delighted to welcome you to our Society. It’s easy to join – just complete our on-line application form. Any queries whatsoever, please do not hesitate to email Sue Hargreaves, our EPNS membership secretary on firstname.lastname@example.org

Research and Science
The main role of the EPNS Research and Scientific Committee is to advise on the scientific programme of the EPNS congress which is held biennially. In addition they provide guidance for symposia or sessions organised, or co-organised, by the EPNS within scientific meetings of other societies. Another important activity of the EPNS Research and Scientific Committee is the development of a European Research Conference in Paediatric Neurology, held every two years.
Honorary membership is for persons who the society wishes to honour for outstanding distinction in the field of paediatric neurology. Honorary membership is the highest honour which the EPNS can give and it recognises an exceptional contribution at international level to the field of paediatric neurology.
Education & Training
The EPNS has a programme of training courses to offer fellows and (young) paediatric neurologists the opportunity to learn paediatric neurology at a level prescribed by the Syllabus of the EPNS, to meet experts in the field and to exchange knowledge and personal experience. These are two-day courses at a location that can be easily reached at a relatively low cost. There will be a written examination at the end of the course. Because of the interactive character of the course, there is an upper limit of around 75 participants.
