Topic: More Than Meets The Eye: Looking Beyond Infantile Spasms

Even though Infantile Epileptic Spasm Syndrome (IESS) is one of the rare epilepsy syndromes in pediatrics, early identification and treatment are crucial for better outcomes. In addition, with the advancement in radiologic and genetic investigations, detecting the culprit behind infantile spasms is becoming more feasible and is helping to improve patient care through precision medicine.

Dr. Hadi will present a case of a 3-month-old infant, who was diagnosed with West Syndrome but was not responsive to first-line treatments. Subsequently, a brain MRI done for the child showed features consistent with a specific neurometabolic disorder, which was later confirmed on rapid genetic testing. Specific treatment for the condition was started, and the child improved and became seizure-free afterward

Senior Mentor: Dr Samar Almuntaser
