Background: The UZ Leuven department of Pediatrics is a leading academic tertiary care centre for all pediatric disciplines, and also has an important role in innovative research and in education/training. The pediatric metabolic diseases unit consists of a multidisciplinary team and has a long-standing tradition of excellence in both research and clinical care. Within the department of Pediatrics, this unit works closely with a number of well-established disciplines including neurology, gastroenterology and hepatology, nephrology, pulmonology, cardiology, endocrinology, hematology & oncology. The unit also has close links with the Neonatology department, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the Centre for Human Genetics and the Metabolic Laboratory. Together with the Centre for Adult Metabolic Diseases, it forms the largest Centre for Metabolic Diseases of Belgium.

This position involves three main aspects:

Clinical care: Provide the very best academic clinical care for children with metabolic diseases,. You will be assisted by a strong multidisciplinary team of experienced staff (dieticans, psychologists, physiotherapist, social assistant and specialist nurses), who will be working under your leadership.

Clinical scientific research: You have a strong scientific background and the ambition of developing new medical treatments or discovering new diseases or disease mechanisms by translational and clinical research in metabolic diseases.

Education and Training: You are willing to provide training to both medical students and trainees in pediatric medicine, as well as to doctoral students if required.

Competency profile:

The medical staff member of the Pediatrics department will be able to deliver excellent clinical care in a quality-oriented and innovative way. Working in a spirit of interdisciplinary cooperation, he/she will build constructive professional relationships and shows strong communication skills. In terms of people management, he/she will be capable of inspiring team members and aiding their continuing development.

Requirements:

You have a degree as a medical specialist in Pediatric Medicine, pediatric metabolic diseases or pediatric neurology, which is recognized in Belgium/European Union. The level of appointment will be determined on the basis of clinical expertise, experience and your curriculum vitae. Previous/Existing academic research and academic teaching posts will also play a significant part in the assessment process. International experience is an advantage. In view of the clinical responsibilities of the position, knowledge of the Dutch language is essential (at least level 4/ CEFR level B1 within 3 months of employment). This exclusive full-time appointment within UZ Leuven may also encompass an academic appointment by KU Leuven, subject to submission of a doctoral thesis.
