With a heavy heart on behalf of the whole EPNS Board, I am sad to announce the passing of Professor Paul Casaer on 30 July 2020. We extend our sincerest condolences at this sad time to his family, friends and the many colleagues around the world who had the privilege of working with him, and receiving his tuition and guidance.

Born on 22nd September 1940 in Belgium, Professor Paul Casaer made many major contributions to the field of paediatric neurology. He was the founding director of the department of Paediatric Neurology, of the Developmental Neurology research unit and of the Paediatric Rehabilitation Centre Pulderbos. Honorary director of the Children’s Hospital of the University Hospital Leuven. He was also the scientific advisor to the board of directors of the Marguerite Marie Delacroix foundation Brussels-Tienen.

A respected honorary member of the EPNS, Professor Casaer has been with the Society since its beginning. Paul was the first elected President of the EPNS, serving for a term of 8 years, and a member of the EPNS Executive board for 12 years and along with Professor Victor Dubowitz he was the founding editor of the Society Journal, the European Journal of Paediatric Neurology (EJPN).

The EPNS will mark his passing with a special paper on his contribution to our specialty in the EJPN and on our website.

His positive influence will forever be felt throughout the paediatric neurology community. A lovely gentle man allied to determination and a great intellect, he will be deeply missed.

Best wishes
